I was a Carvin guy for a number of years, and their QC and overall build quality just simply blew past everybody else at 1000mph.**This is a pre-order. ![]() Not just at that price point, but period, in my experience. Since their manufacturing hasn't significantly changed when Jeff Kiesel took over most of the operation from his dad, I don't see any reason to think their instruments have gone down in quality, so I wouldn't worry that you'll get a badly made bass from them. The only bad thing about Kiesel is resale value, an unfortunate problem they inherited from the Carvin days.īut I wouldn't let that deter you from getting one. I personally am not really charged up about their current designs, except the Brian Bromberg. I had a Bromberg 5 string FL for a while and it was, far and away, the most ergonomic and comfortable bass I've ever laid my hands on. I later had to come to terms with that fact I didn't really like the way it sounded, even without frets on it, but if you want the most ergonomic bass ever made, you want a Bromberg. So I would expect them to be discontinued eventually.īut if you like the designs, and don't mind the wait (which is months and months), I wouldn't hesitate to get one.Ĭlick to expand.Well, since you asked -) The Icon is still made too, but it and the Bromberg aren't the biggest sellers in the world. The grain pattern that makes maple curly is essentially a sort of 'wave' pattern in the wood. Cutting a straight line through that wave Intersects with the rising and falling grain to create the "flame" figure that we all know and love. Wood with this figure has less strength along the axis of the grain, as the wood fibers are not straight. Ebony fretboard with ebony binding, 12-16 compound. ![]() ![]() Think of the difference between a piece of straight wire and a spring, as a rough analogy. Rosewood fingerboard with white binding and acrylic block inlays 24 medium jumbo frets,25,5 scale (648 mm). (Interestingly enough, this fact means that curly wood has more even/homogenous stiffness in all directions vs. This is arguably one reason why violin-family instrument makers Which is normally much stiffer along the grain than across it. ![]()
